After drafting or buying a commercial pattern, it could be adapted to different designs and styles. Before adaptation, study the various pattern pieces carefully and the instructions. Patterns generally are the basics for making other designs.
Adaptation of basic blocks
i. Draw the described style or have a picture of the style.
ii. Outline the blocks needed to be developed in another paper.
iii. Slash and spread on the new paper if fullness is required or change of darts’ position is needed.
iv. Add extra allowance if desired.
v. Include any desired style/feature such as collars and pockets.
vi. Reduce or lengthen the patterns at the adaptation stage before cutting
