Mars 2140 (11)

…GO TO PREVIOUS SCENE            …GO TO TITLE PAGE

{INT. LAB, WHITE CONTAINER – NIGHT}

Bolaji, Tari, Brian, Robert, Susan, Mark and Aarav walk inside.

BOLAJI
First, I want to apologise for keeping this from everyone.
(carries a plastic cylindrical container)
See.
(keeps the cylindrical container on the lab table)
My men found them in underground water.
(Susan glances at Mark, wears a glove and deepens her hand into the icy cylindrical container)
Don’t touch them.
(Susan removes her hand inside the cylindrical container)

ROBERT
What’s inside?

Tari presses a button at the side of the cylindrical container and the contents in it appear on a wide projector screen on the wall.

Three 20cm long and 5cm wide creatures that look like mudskippers; having two human-like hands and a fishtail each are moving about in the ice.

BOLAJI
I named them Brulumars. They feed on an iceberg.

AARAV
Is that what’s causing the alarm?

TARI
We think so.

MARK
(giggles)
Brulumars!

BRIAN
Sounds like Russian.

AARAV
He’s Russian.

BRIAN
Fuck it, I know.

BOLAJI
(touches a button on his right hand and the spinning cone-like machine; drawing water from Mars’ interior appears on the screen)
Look carefully.
(suddenly, a big blurry object touches the machine)
Do you see that?

ROBERT
What the hell is that?

BOLAJI
Something big is living there.

AARAV
O my God! I thought we were on a lonely planet.

TARI
Each time it hits the machine, it releases energies which somehow strengthens the three Brulumars in this container.

BOLAJI
That’s what’s caused the alarm.

TARI
Our footage shows that it’s a bigger Brulumars.

AARAV
What are we going to do?

ROBERT
(moves to the screen)
I think it’s the mother of these things.
(checks carefully)
They kind of emit signals or communicate with each other from distances. It will be wise to…

SUSAN
(interrupts)
Hunt it!
(Bolaji and Tari glance at each other)

TARI
There could be thousands of them out there.

BOLAJI
If they can communicate with each other through a network, hunting them could lead to war.

MARK
We definitely would win.
(the big creature starts hitting the pumping machine continuously)

TARI
The energy this thing emits can destroy the machine if it hits it for up to seven thousand times.

AARAV
Jesus Christ!

SUSAN
Why didn’t you make something stronger when you knew you were going to live here forever?

BOLAJI
We didn’t expect to find living things that could pose a threat to our survival on Mars.

ROBERT
Okay! I think we should return the things in this container and see what happens.

BRIAN
Brilliant.

MARK
What if they keep attacking?

ROBERT
The best solution would be to pull out the machine and use melted ice as a source of water.

BOLAJI
Life would be difficult for all our people here if we do that because such water won’t be enough.

SUSAN
I thought you have tanks.

TARI
Melting that ice would require a lot of electrical power and we do not have that.

BOLAJI
Okay, let’s return the little Brulumars to their kind and deal with any further threat at all cost.

BRIAN
Good.

AARAV
But how do we do that?

BOLAJI
We’ll drop them in the pipe that flushes water out of the dome back into the ground.

{EXT. DOME}

Tari and Aarav are carrying the cylindrical container containing the Brulumars. They get to a metallic liquid container.

AARAV
(faces the direction where people are dancing to music in a distance)
This people do not know that their lives are at risk right now.

TARI
(opens the liquid container)
We just need to drop them in here.

AARAV
All right.
(carries the cylindrical container together with Tari and pours all its contents into the liquid container)

TARI
(closes the container and turns a small wheel attached to it)
Flushed.

{INT. LAB, WHITE CONTAINER}

Bolaji, Brian, Robert, Susan and Mark are steadfastly viewing the projector screen on the wall.

Flowing water carries the three Brulumars through the spinning cone-like machine under the northern polar cap of Mars.

Suddenly, the big creature hitting the machine stops hitting the machine.

BOLAJI
Whoa!

SUSAN
(exhales)
Thank God!

BOLAJI
(glances at Mark)
Another Christian.

They all laugh.

{EXT. DOME}

The emergency beeping sound and flashing light stop.

TARI
We did it!

AARAV
Yeah!

{INT. CARAVAN, DOME – DAY}

Mark’s discovered sculpture is on a table. Brian, Robert and Susan are sitting around the sculpture.

BRIAN
How did you get it?

ROBERT
Susan bought it from the Russian.

BRIAN
With what currency?

SUSAN
The power of a woman.

ROBERT
(smiles)
This is the future.
(touches the sculpture)
Those creatures are intelligent beings.

BRIAN
Yeah.

ROBERT
What I’m not sure about is if they were the one that made this thing. However, it has given us clues on what we might come across beneath the surface of this planet.

SUSAN
We need to study about those creatures.

BRIAN
Hmm…

ROBERT
As far as I know, they are still living out there. We don’t know how many they are. But we’ll get to them.

BRIAN
What? Why did you let the infant ones go when you know you were going to need them for your research?

ROBERT
I didn’t want them to be in the wrong hands.

SUSAN
(to Brian)
Come on, we have sophisticated tools and the best way to handle these things than anyone on this planet.

BRIAN
This wasn’t our mission, guys.

ROBERT
Well, it is now.

{COCKPIT, NG115M}

BOLAJI
(into a telephone)
Sir, life is good here and everyone is fine. You can proceed with the next
mission.

MALE VOICE (V.O)
(over the telephone)
Our population is increasing and we’re running out of resources. We’ll be sending hundred million people and the facilities that will sustain them soon.

BOLAJI
There are so many natural resources here, sir.
(sees Robert walking towards the craft)
911, approaching. I have to go, sir.

MALE VOICE (V.O)
(over the telephone)
Good job, Doc.

BOLAJI
Thank you, Mr President!
