The Church – a brief study outline

1.     The foundation of the Church:

Originally, the church was founded by Jesus Christ on Peter’s confession that Jesus Christ was (and is) the Son of God, the Messiah, the Christ, God incarnate in humanity. Our Saviour did not build the church on Peter, but on Peter’s words. The name Peter – petros – means “a small stone” while the other word – petra(Greek word) means “a huge rock”…. Bedrock. Note: It is not Peter himself who is the foundation of the        Church but his confession of Jesus, the “huge rock”. The church belong to Jesus Christ. Matthew 16:18. He is our Redeemer. By His preaching, His suffering, His atoning death, and His resurrection, has brought about the formation and foundation of the church. Ephesians 2:18- 22; 3’20- 21. He did not arrange for an organization; but He taught the principles upon which it should be built. He did not tell His disciples what the mechanical structure of the church was to be; He sent them out to preach a salvation by faith in His Name. He refers to the conflict, battles and opposition against the church as the “gates of hell”. He promised the spirit of truth who will lead His followers into all truth. John 16:7-14. In this dispensation of Grace by the operation of the Holy Spirit, the Father, Son and the Holy Ghost do administer over the affairs of the church. I Corinthians 12:4 -6.

2.     Historically:

The church was founded at Pentecost, Acts 2:1- 4, when the Spirit descended, Acts 2:47. The Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved. At that time every church member who believe must turn from his iniquities. Acts 3: 26; 5:12 – 14. They had stated places of meeting Acts 1:13, 5:12; 12:12. They had special time of their meeting, daily. Acts 2:46; 3:1-9. Also on each of the Lord’s day Acts 20:7.

3.     The Church in the Wilderness:

This was the reference made which refers to the Old Testament believers who were called out of Egypt, and were marching towards the Promised Land. Acts 7:37- 38.

4.   To who are the Keys of the Kingdom given? Is it Peter only?

The answer is no. You can see Matthew 18: 18. John 20:19 – 23. The keys are given to all the disciples of the church of Jesus Christ. However, Peter used the Keys to open the door of faith for the Jewish Nation in the day of Pentecost. Acts 2:14 – 47. Peter also used the Keys and opened the door of faith to the Gentiles in the house of Cornelius according to Acts 10: 34 – 48.

Further in I Corinthians 4: 15, Paul used the keys to open the door of faith to the Corinthians. He also made this statement in Galatians Z:8, “For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the Apostleship of the circumcision, the same was mighty in me toward the Gentiles; the Apostles and the prophets are the foundational and foundation ministers ……. Ephesians 2: 20
