The Evangelist

These are individuals who are gifted in the preaching of the gospel and help others accept The Lord Jesus Christ as Saviour. “He gave some evangelists…” Eph. 4:11. They are heralds of the glad tidings, preachers of the gospel of the grace of God, who awaken the careless and win souls for Christ. The evangelists’ special concern is for the lost and unsaved souls, and his sphere of labour is in the world; while that of the Pastor and teacher is in the church among the children of God.

In Acts 21:8, we read of “Philip the Evangelists.” St. Paul was also gifted as an Evangelist. He laboured in this field so much as an Evangelist. He laboured in this field so much as we see in his missionary journeys. His aim was “to preach the gospel in the regions beyond” 2nd Cor. 10:16. He also encouraged Timothy to do the work of an evangelist”, 2nd Tim. 4:4-5. Although some people are gifted in this direction, yet every Christian must be involved in soul winning either by a single hook or by a great net in different dimensions.

The duty or responsibility of preaching the good news of Jesus Christ is the collective responsibility of every Christian and it is the great commission directly commanded by our Lord and Master Jesus Christ. Matt. 28:19; Mk. 16:15. The Lord was busy from place to place preaching the word, advised His followers to do so, and to pray for more preachers. Thus He says “The harvest truly is great but the labourers are few. Pray ye therefore the Lord of Harvest, that He would send forth labourers into the harvest” Luke 10:2. And anyone who does not involve himself in the gospel either by conversation, life style (in different dimensions as the Lord shall lead), etc. is not a Christian.
