The Ministration of Baptism

Hymns. (Two to be sung, during which the candidates will take convenient seats in their order of being baptised).

Matt. 3:13-17. “Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptised of him. But John forbad Him, saying, I have need to be baptised of Thee, and comest Thou to me? And Jesus answering said unto him, ‘Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. ‘ Then he suffered Him. And Jesus, when He was baptised, went up straightway out of the water, and lo, the heavens were opened unto Him, and He saw a dove, and lighting upon Him. And lo! a voice from heaven, saying; ‘This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

Matt. 28:18-20. “And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, “All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo! I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. “

John 14:21. “He that hath My commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth Me: and he that loveth Me shall loved of My Father, and I will love him, and will manifest Myself to him. “

Acts 8:35-39. “Then Philip opened his mouth and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the Eunuch said, ‘See here is water what doth hinder me to be baptised? ‘And Philip said, ‘If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest ‘And he answered and said, ‘I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.’ And he commanded the chariot to stand still and they went down both into the water both Philip an&he eunuch; and he baptised him. And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.”

Acts 10:43-48. “To Him give all the prophets witness that through His name whosoever believeth in Him shall receive remission of sins. “

While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy. Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.

For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, ‘Can any man forbid wafer, that these should not be baptised, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? ‘And he commanded them to be baptised in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days. “

Romans 6;1-23. “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Know ye not that so many of us as were baptised into Jesus Christ were baptised into His death? Therefore we are buried with Him by baptism into death: that likes as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of His death we shall be also in the likeness of His resurrection i knowing this, that our old man is crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that hence-forth we should not serve sin. For he that dead is freed from sin. Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him; knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over Him. For in that He died, He died unto sin once: but in that He liveth, He liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. Neat then? Shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. Know ye not, that to whom ye field yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? Bud God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were five from righteousness. What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. “

Colossians 2:12-15. “Buried with Him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with Him through the faith of the operation of God, Who hath raised Him from the dead. And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath He quickened together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses; blotting out the hand-writing of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to His cross; and having spoiled principalities and powers, He made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it.”

(This can be replaced by solo or other musical item).

Advantage should always be taken of laying down the true principles of the Christian faith as represented by this ordinance,

All candidates before entering the water should make a confession of their faith in Christ, and also an acknowledgment of their death union with Jesus Christ.

“On the confession of your faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, and the word of your testimony, I baptise thee my brother (sister) in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen!”

(It is very needful beforehand to instruct and explain the manner of baptism to each candidate, so as. to enable them to go through with comfort and composure).

During the baptism of each candidate a suitable chorus should be sung.

“The peace of God, which passeth all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God and His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost, remain with you always. Amen!”
